The two-piece hard capsule has evolved significantly since its inception around 170 years ago.1 One of the most versatile dosage forms used for formulating pharmaceutical products, today’s hard capsules have opened avenues for innovation by offering a high degree of flexibility in terms of what they can contain – from powders and pellets to semisolids and even liquids. Additionally, capsules can also be used to deliver more than one active ingredient with the added advantage of masking unpleasant taste and odour.
Generally Capsules are flexible dosage filled with granules or pellets. Historically being based on gelatin, capsule manufacturers have meanwhile developed capsules with a hypromellose shell.
What is HPMC:
“HPMC is a plant based product, a purified form of cellulose, obtained from wood pulp. According to EU regulation 1169/2011 on food information to consumers, annex I, HPMC is categorized as a “Fibre” with following definition: carbohydrate polymer with three or more monomeric units, which are neither digested nor absorbed in the human small intestine. Current laboratory test methods for dietary fibre, such as AOAC 985.29, are however not properly detecting HPMC as a dietary fibre. HPMC is however an edible carbohydrate polymer, a dietary fibre with a beneficial physiological effect demonstrated by generally accepted scientific evidence and hence can be voluntarily declared as such.”
The features of Medical HPMC Vacant Capsule
Better moisture stability of the capsule as hypromellose attracts less moisture than gelatin. Less risk as hypromellose is plant derived while gelatin is animal derived. The optimal solution for patients who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.
Capsule shell
Capsules prepared from hypromellose have advantages in comparison with gelatin based capsules. Hypromellose capsules show a better moisture stability and are suitable for vegetarian/vegan patients.
